Definition and purpose of cookies

What are “cookies”? A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you access certain websites. Cookies allow a website, among other things, to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or their computer and, depending on the information they contain and the way you use your computer, they can be used to recognize the user.

Types of cookies and purposes

Below, we show a classification of cookies according to a series of categories. However, it should be borne in mind that the same cookie may be included in more than one category.

  • Depending on the entity that manages the equipment or domain from which the cookies are sent, and the data obtained are processed, two types of cookies can be distinguished:
    • First-party cookies: These are those that are sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by us from which the service requested by the user is provided.
    • Third-party cookies: These are those that are sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain that is not managed by us, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
  • Depending on the period of time they remain active, two types of cookies can be distinguished:
    • Session cookies: These are a type of cookie designed to request and store data while the user accesses the website. They are used to storing information that only needs to be kept for the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion.
      1. These cookies are used, for example, to facilitate navigation on the website, and to allow the user to authenticate or maintain the session in his or her personal area of the website upon request.
      2. These session cookies are also used to establish security measures to protect the user against unauthorized attempts to access their personal area.
      3. These cookies are temporary and deleted from your computer when you finish browsing the website.
  • Persistent cookies: These are a type of cookie in which the data remains stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie, which can range from a few minutes to several years.
  • According to their purpose, the following distinctions can be made:
    • Technical Cookies: These are those cookies that allow the user to browse through a website, platform, or application and use the different options or services therein, for example, control traffic and data communication, identify the session, access restricted areas, remember the elements that make up an application, carry out the authorization process, make the application for registration or participation in an event, use security elements during browsing, or store content for the dissemination of videos or sound or share content through social networks.
    • Personalization cookies: These are cookies that allow the user to access the service with certain predefined general characteristics depending on a series of criteria in the user’s terminal, such as language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional configuration from which the service is accessed, etc.
    • Analytical cookies: These cookies allow us to monitor and analyze the behavior of users accessing our website. The information collected through this type of cookies is used to measure the activity of the websites, application or platform and for the elaboration of navigation profiles of the users of these sites, applications, and platforms, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the usage data of the users of the service.
    • Advertising cookies: These cookies enable the management of advertising spaces included on the website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as the content edited or the frequency at which the advertisements are shown.
